ABOUT DIGITAL CAMERAS
The course will encompass the basics of photography and how
to get satisfying results from your digital camera. One of the sessions will be
a Field Day when we try out our cameras in a controlled situation and compare
results. Members who have computers will learn how to download Picasa3 and how
to use it for printing or sending photos by e-mail. This course will also be
useful for those contemplating buying a digital camera.

Gentle exercises to music at scenic Mittagong Pool, under

BOWLING AT BOWRAL
The course content will include instruction in the object
of the game and method of scoring. Practical instruction in the grip and
delivery of the jack and the bowl. How to find the line of delivery. Definitions
and duties of various members of the team and different types of games played.
Laws and etiquette. Bowls will be supplied. Dress is casual with flat soled
shoes or slippers. Runners are acceptable for beginners. Cost for this course is

COMMUNITY RADIO-PROGRAMMING AND PRESENTING
A course for volunteer programmers and presenters. The
course will include the Structure and History of Highland FM cooperative, an
introduction to broadcasting laws and practice, preparing a programme using
studio equipment, off-air recording, presenting and interviewing. Participants
will have the opportunity to assist in or start up new programmes especially
other-language programmes.

COMPUTERS, COFFEE AND CHAT
It’s about getting to know you and your computer. Getting

DISCRIMINATION AND PREJUDICE
The course will encompass current and historical
documentation of discrimination and prejudices around the world. Participants
will be part of a team and will be expected to research and present findings to
the group. It is envisioned that four teams will participate
in presentations and deliver facts and information to
substantiate their presentation to the group. The leader of the course will act
as convenor and offer suggested reading, historical documentation and monitor
the groups. It will be expected at the end of the course detailed information
will enlighten the members of the group. Religion, politics, economics, gender
and colour discrimination and prejudice will be the major topics.

EMBROIDERY CANDLEWICKING AND CROSS STITCH
We do various types of embroidery. Candlewicking, Cross

The Buskers constitute the most original group of
instrumentalists ever imagined. The players range in experience from former

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS
This course is designed for those who have had little or no
previous experience with computers. Apart from learning how to operate a
computer the course will cover the elements of the program: Microsoft Word (2003
or earlier). By the end of the course a participant should be able to type a
letter on the computer, be able to make amendments, save and retrieve a copy. In
addition the class will be shown: formatting, typestyles, headers and footers,
elements of printing, preparation of tables and inclusion of graphics. The final
session will cover how to go about buying a computer. This is a hands on
course, each participant being allocated a desktop computer for practice during
the session. Ownership of a computer, while desirable, is not essential .There
will be a $20.00 fee for morning tea/coffee and notes/disks payable on

LANDSCAPE, CULTURE, PHILOSOPY: GARDENS EAST AND WEST
Starting with an examination of the origins of parks and
gardens in early human history, the course will lead to the identification of
relationships between historical, cultural and philosophical developments and
the purposes and designs of gardens, firstly in China and Japan and then in
Europe. The method will be based on the detailed review of a number of important
gardens in each region. Two excursions are planned.

MAUPASSANT (ET LA CHANSON FRANCAISE)
For those who have done French before ‘France 2’ has made a
delightful series called “Chez Maupassant”. This term we will watch Histoire
d’une fille de ferme, La parure, L’heritage et Deux amis. There will be reading,
writing, hearing and speaking and plenty of optional reading. The connection
between the stories and the French songs for discussion will be loose!

NORDIC WALKING
Nordic Walking, originally developed for Finnish ski teams,
is walking assisted with poles (like ski poles). This provides greater
cardiovascular exercise (+25% to 40%) and less stress on joints. It also aids
stability where required and is aimed at pleasurable exercise rather than a
strenuous workout. Enjoy social contact while gaining significant benefit to
fitness and flexibility. Ring the course leader to ask about buying or hiring

ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE
Mankind’s ideas about the universe from ancient times until
today. Without mathematics, in a simple, enjoyable way, we will examine the
development of the Big Bang theory, the false starts, the breakthroughs and the
final triumph. We will discuss the lives and works of some famous scientists who
contributed to our present day knowledge of cosmology. Aristotle, Copernicus,
Kepler, Galileo, Newton, Einstein, Hubble, Garnow, Hoyle, Hawking and many more.
The course will run weekly over two terms with extensive illustrated notes

RADIO (AUDIO) DRAMA GROUP
This group, now in its third term, meets every Tuesday
morning for two hours of audio (radio) acting skills development, script
analysis and the production of various kinds of audio material. So far the group
has produced a full length radio play for Highland FM, an audio feature for
Vision Australia and a short play for the U3A concert. The writing sub group,
which meets every Saturday morning, is writing, as a group, a radio serial to be
produced for Highland FM and other community stations. New members are welcome,
especially men, but a fairly serious commitment is required from members who
wish to be cast in productions. The emphasis is on enjoyment and ‘acting for
fun’. It is not necessary to learn lines.

SENSE AND SENSITIVITY
After a brief review of our senses (taste, touch, hearing,
smell and sight) and their sensitivity we look at the art of pulling the wool
over the human perceptual system, especially optical illusions. Next we will

THE SLEEPWALKERS – A HISTORY OF SCIENCE
We will look at some of the natural philosophers and
scientists of the last 2500 years, the “sleepwalkers” who imagined today’s world
into being. In this revised version of the course given in 2005 extra emphasis
will be given to the lives and times of key scientists. This seemed especially
appropriate as 2009 is the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s
birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of “The Origin of
Species”, the book which changed forever the way we humans saw our place in the
world.

This course is back by popular demand and the generosity of
both the New Empire Cinema and Coffee Culture. Group one is scheduled for
the first Wednesday of the month.

month. The cinema manager will be choosing a movie from current releases which
his experience indicates our members will enjoy. The title
of the February movie will be notified with enrolment confirmations.

WESTERN MUSIC THROUGH THE AGES
This course will cover the long history of western music
from the Ancient Greeks to today. A short talk, supported by explanatory notes
will precede each week’s program which will consist of recordings selected to
illustrate various aspects of Western music as it evolved from its Ancient Greek
origins into that of Early Christian times, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance,
the Baroque, the Classical and Romantic periods until finally arriving at our
