ABOUT DIGITAL CAMERAS

The course will encompass the basics of photography and how to get satisfying results from your digital camera. One of the sessions will be a Field Day when we try out our cameras in a controlled situation and compare results. Members who have computers will learn how to download Picasa3 and how to use it for printing or sending photos by e-mail. This course will also be useful for those contemplating buying a digital camera.

AQUA EXERCISES

Gentle exercises to music at scenic Mittagong Pool, under the guidance of Austswim qualified teacher of swimming. Exercise may be at your own pace. Swimming costume or T shirt and shorts, towel and/or robe. Borrow polystyrene noodles from your grandchildren. Pool entrance fee is $2.50 per visit. Please ring the course leader immediately if you wish to join this course.

BEGINNERS’ SPANISH

This is a course for those who have not done Spanish before. Reading and writing as well as speaking the language will be the focus. Students will need to buy a text book costing $50.00 and CD costing $70.00.

BOWLING AT BOWRAL

The course content will include instruction in the object of the game and method of scoring. Practical instruction in the grip and delivery of the jack and the bowl. How to find the line of delivery. Definitions and duties of various members of the team and different types of games played. Laws and etiquette. Bowls will be supplied. Dress is casual with flat soled shoes or slippers. Runners are acceptable for beginners. Cost for this course is $25.00 per person for green fees and bowls hire.

COMBINED RECORDER ENSEMBLE

This course is designed for people who can read music and have had some experience of playing the recorder.  The ensemble will be divided into two groups to facilitate teaching at different levels. Intending new players should contact the course leader prior to enrolment.

COMMUNITY RADIO-PROGRAMMING AND PRESENTING

A course for volunteer programmers and presenters. The course will include the Structure and History of Highland FM cooperative, an introduction to broadcasting laws and practice, preparing a programme using studio equipment, off-air recording, presenting and interviewing. Participants will have the opportunity to assist in or start up new programmes especially other-language programmes.

COMPUTERS, COFFEE AND CHAT

It’s about getting to know you and your computer.  Getting to know it, its quirks and hang ups. A friendly Q and A meeting, in which we note new computer developments and share, discuss and hopefully, solve our computer problems.  While not designed for beginners, beginners can get a lot from it.

DISCRIMINATION AND PREJUDICE

The course will encompass current and historical documentation of discrimination and prejudices around the world. Participants will be part of a team and will be expected to research and present findings to the group. It is envisioned that four teams will participate

in presentations and deliver facts and information to substantiate their presentation to the group. The leader of the course will act as convenor and offer suggested reading, historical documentation and monitor the groups. It will be expected at the end of the course detailed information will enlighten the members of the group. Religion, politics, economics, gender and colour discrimination and prejudice will be the major topics.

EMBROIDERY CANDLEWICKING AND CROSS STITCH

We do various types of embroidery. Candlewicking, Cross stitch, Grub Roses. Anything to do with a needle. Everyone has a try to see which they enjoy the most. Lots of company and friendship.  There will be a small charge for materials and morning tea.

FAMILY HISTORY

An interest group for those undertaking family history research. Assistance for those starting to search, and a forum for more experienced searchers. There will be occasional guest speakers/excursions.

FUN WITH WATER COLOUR

A friendly group meeting to exchange ideas and explore all aspects of watercolour.  All are aiming for higher achievement and are happy to experiment with this medium and to help one another.  Some experience required as there is no tuition in this course.

HIGHLAND BUSKERS

The Buskers constitute the most original group of instrumentalists ever imagined. The players range in experience from former professionals to absolute beginners, but all share two things- a passion for their playing, and a great sense of humour. INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS

This course is designed for those who have had little or no previous experience with computers. Apart from learning how to operate a computer the course will cover the elements of the program: Microsoft Word (2003 or earlier). By the end of the course a participant should be able to type a letter on the computer, be able to make amendments, save and retrieve a copy. In addition the class will be shown: formatting, typestyles, headers and footers, elements of printing, preparation of tables and inclusion of graphics. The final session will cover how to go about buying a computer. This is a hands  on course, each participant being allocated a desktop computer for practice during the session. Ownership of a computer, while desirable, is not essential .There will be a $20.00 fee for morning tea/coffee and notes/disks payable on first day of term. Text book will be the Australian Senior’s Guide to Microsoft Word for Windows available at newsagents for $14.95

LANDSCAPE, CULTURE, PHILOSOPY: GARDENS EAST AND WEST

Starting with an examination of the origins of parks and gardens in early human history, the course will lead to the identification of relationships between historical, cultural and philosophical developments and the purposes and designs of gardens, firstly in China and Japan and then in Europe. The method will be based on the detailed review of a number of important gardens in each region. Two excursions are planned.

MAUPASSANT (ET LA CHANSON FRANCAISE)

For those who have done French before ‘France 2’ has made a delightful series called “Chez Maupassant”. This term we will watch Histoire d’une fille de ferme, La parure, L’heritage et Deux amis. There will be reading, writing, hearing and speaking and plenty of optional reading. The connection between the stories and the French songs for discussion will be loose! MODERN EUROPEAN HISTORY

First term will be shortened. There should be no further interruption in 2009.We shall finish Germany – Weimar, Hitler and the Nazi administration of Germany and its empire to 1945, with only a cursory look at the battles of WW2

NORDIC WALKING

Nordic Walking, originally developed for Finnish ski teams, is walking assisted with poles (like ski poles). This provides greater cardiovascular exercise (+25% to 40%) and less stress on joints. It also aids stability where required and is aimed at pleasurable exercise rather than a strenuous workout. Enjoy social contact while gaining significant benefit to fitness and flexibility. Ring the course leader to ask about buying or hiring Nordic Walking Poles.

ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE

Mankind’s ideas about the universe from ancient times until today. Without mathematics, in a simple, enjoyable way, we will examine the development of the Big Bang theory, the false starts, the breakthroughs and the final triumph. We will discuss the lives and works of some famous scientists who contributed to our present day knowledge of cosmology. Aristotle, Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Newton, Einstein, Hubble, Garnow, Hoyle, Hawking and many more. The course will run weekly over two terms with extensive illustrated notes provided most weeks. There will be a charge of $20.00, payable at the first session, to cover photocopying and morning tea/coffee

RADIO (AUDIO) DRAMA GROUP

This group,  now in its third term, meets every Tuesday morning for  two hours of  audio (radio) acting skills development, script analysis and the production of various kinds of audio material. So far the group has produced a full length radio play for Highland FM, an audio feature for Vision Australia and a short play for the U3A concert. The writing sub group, which meets every Saturday morning, is writing, as a group, a radio serial to be produced for Highland FM and other community stations. New members are welcome, especially men, but a fairly serious commitment is required from members who wish to be cast in productions. The emphasis is on enjoyment and ‘acting for fun’. It is not necessary to learn lines.

SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCING

Scottish Country Dancing is the ballroom dance of Scotland – danced in sets of 3 or 4 couples (it is not Highland Dancing).  Scottish Country Dancing is a fun way for men & women to exercise the mind & body with a happy social spirit to the stimulating music of Scotland.  No special dress is required – just soft-soled shoes.

                                                                                                                                                 SENSE AND SENSITIVITY

After a brief review of our senses (taste, touch, hearing, smell and sight) and their sensitivity we look at the art of pulling the wool over the human perceptual system, especially optical illusions. Next we will consider the thinking required to meet other mental challenges such as solving puzzles and other mind games.

1066 AND ALL THAT

This Course looks at everyday life in England in the Middle Ages, beginning with the Norman Conquest of 1066. Some of the aspects we will consider are homes, food, work, health and hygiene, religion and pastimes.

THE SLEEPWALKERS – A HISTORY OF SCIENCE

We will look at some of the natural philosophers and scientists of the last 2500 years, the “sleepwalkers” who imagined today’s world into being. In this revised version of the course given in 2005 extra emphasis will be given to the lives and times of key scientists. This seemed especially appropriate as 2009 is the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of “The Origin of Species”, the book which changed forever the way we humans saw our place in the world.

U3A AT THE CINEMA - GROUP 1

This course is back by popular demand and the generosity of both the New Empire Cinema and Coffee Culture. Group one is scheduled for the first Wednesday of the month.

Group two for the second Wednesday of the month. The cinema manager will be choosing a movie from current releases which his experience indicates our members will enjoy. The title of the February movie will be notified with enrolment confirmations. Term cost for the Cinema tickets/coffee is $25.00 to be paid when enrolling. This is non-refundable but may be transferred to another U3A member.

VOICES IN HARMONY                                                                                                         If you enjoy singing a wide variety of music, (classical, folk, jazz, gospel, musical, modern) this is the choir for you! Ability to read music helps, but is not essential. We are a free spirited, fun loving group for whom singing together is an essential part of our lives.

WESTERN MUSIC THROUGH THE AGES

This course will cover the long history of western music from the Ancient Greeks to today. A short talk,  supported by explanatory notes will precede each week’s program which will consist of recordings selected to illustrate various aspects of Western music as it evolved from its Ancient Greek origins into that of Early Christian times, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque, the Classical and Romantic periods until finally arriving at our present times. There will be a term charge of $15.00 for course materials and afternoon tea.
